Construction And WASH https://uwsnepal.org/uwsconstruction/ Thu, 24 Aug 2023 03:52:56 +0000 https://uwsnepal.org/?p=22593 UWS Nepal builds safe and robust school infrastructure in remote communities. We have constructed 72 earthquake-resistant child-friendly schools that include school buildings, gender-friendly universal access WASH facilities, and playgrounds in impoverished areas of Nepal.

UWS Construction model boasts its community participatory approach in which locally available material and human resources are capitalized during the construction process. Our schools are reinforced concrete framed single-story buildings with brick walls and CGI roofs. The number of classrooms in a school varies from 6 to 12 based on the need of the particular community.

Building and Grounds – Key Standards

  2. The school toilets/WASH are in good condition and properly maintained.
  3. The school grounds are in good condition and secure, with appropriate play areas for children.
  4. There are no visible health and safety concerns at the school.
  5. Buildings and grounds are safe, inclusive, and accessible to all (UWS Inclusion policy).

WHAT IS THE UWS NEPAL TEACHING FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM ?

The UWS Nepal Teaching Fellowship is a transformative two-year program dedicated to improving education in some of Nepal’s most remote and under-resourced communities. By partnering with UWS-supported community schools, Fellows work to enhance educational quality and address educational inequities. They focus on promoting learning, creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills among students while implementing initiatives to improve the overall learning environment and life skills of the children. This fellowship offers a unique opportunity for individuals to make a lasting impact on education in Nepal’s most marginalised and challenging settings.

Launched in 2017, the UWS Teaching Fellowship Program was established to address a critical educational gap in rural Nepal: the severe shortage of qualified teachers, particularly in Mathematics and English. Despite various government initiatives, many schools in these regions face a shortage of skilled educators, especially in multi-grade classrooms. Recognizing the need for innovative solutions and dynamic leadership, UWS Nepal designed this fellowship to bring both skilled educators and visionary leaders into these communities.

Inspired by successful global models, the program aims to infuse rural areas with educators who not only teach but also inspire and uplift both students and local teachers. Over the past seven years, Fellows have played a pivotal role in improving student performance and fostering a vibrant culture of learning and community engagement. With over 2,000 applications received to date, the program has carefully selected and placed 56 exceptional Fellows.

The UWS Teaching Fellowship has become a pioneering initiative in collaboration with local governments, driving innovation and accountability in schools across the target districts of Sankhuwasabha, Gulmi, Taplejung, and Bhojpur. By setting new standards for educational excellence, the program demonstrates how dedicated individuals can lead meaningful change and enhance educational outcomes in even the most underserved areas.
