About UWS Nepal

Revolutionising education in Nepal’s remote and climate-vulnerable communities

Founded in 2015, UWS Nepal is a pioneering organisation dedicated to revolutionising education in Nepal’s most remote and climate-vulnerable communities. We go beyond providing quality education—we build it from the ground up. From constructing earthquake- resistant schools and ensuring access to clean water and sanitation to delivering inclusive and quality education, we address every barrier to learning.

Our mission is to break geographical, cultural, and climate barriers, striving for zero education poverty by empowering children to learn, thrive, and lead. Through local teachers, mothers’ groups, and partnerships with the local government, we ensure every child stays in school despite the barriers of remoteness, poverty, and adversity. We don’t just build schools; we build resilience. By integrating climate education and eco-friendly practices, we prepare communities to adapt and thrive in the face of climate adversity shaping a generation ready to create a sustainable, climate-resilient future.

About UWS Nepal

Approaches

Our Approach

Our approach is rooted in breaking down barriers to education through our six core pillars: Equitable Access, Inclusion, Quality Education, Building Sustainable Communities, Strengthening Education Systems, and Climate Education and Community Preparedness.

Quality Education

Quality Education

In rural Nepal, approximately 50% of students fail to meet academic standards in Nepali, English and Mathematics, revealing significant challenges in teacher quality and training*.

Climate Education and Community Preparedness

Climate Education and Community Preparedness

UWS Nepal incorporates climate education into its programmatic interventions, equipping all students and community networks, such as the Mothers’ Group, with essential life-skills. This includes conducting dynamic wildfire and earthquake drills for both students and their parents/guardians. Sessions on the importance of preserving our climate and the different things we can do to build climate change resilience form an essential component of the Mothers’ Group and community meetings. This commitment to fostering a safer, more sustainable world extends to impactful tree plantation drives, zero plastic campaigns, waste management training, symbolizing the powerful bond between education and environmental stewardship. Together, we are nurturing resilient, greener communities where education becomes a catalyst for sustainability and well-being. By empowering individuals and embracing environmental responsibility, we pave the way for a future that is safe, sustainable, and thriving for everyone.

Equitable Access

Equitable Access

Access to education in rural Nepal is severely unequal, with only 55% of children enrolled in early childhood education and alarmingly high dropout rates, particularly among girls in secondary school, due to geographical, cultural, and financial barriers*.

Inclusion

Inclusion

In Nepal, dropout rates for girls are concerning, with only 65% completing primary education compared to 75% of boys*.

Building Sustainable Communities

Building Sustainable Communities

The Sustainable Development Goals emphasise the need for community-driven solutions in rural education, especially in skill development and vocational training to enhance self-sufficiency and economic stability.*

Strengthening Education Systems

Strengthening Education Systems

Strengthening the education system in rural Nepal is vital to combat high dropout rates, inadequate teacher training, and poor student performance. The World Bank emphasises that local engagement and strong support networks are essential for preventing declining enrollment, particularly among marginalised groups.* Our initiatives focus on collaboration with local governments and organisations for policy advocacy and capacity building, having trained 520 teachers to enhance educational outcomes and ensure that no child is left behind. *Source: World Bank. Surya Karki: Empowering Communities, One School at a Time

Surya’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of education. Born into poverty in a village where education was a rare privilege, he walked 2.5 hours each day to attend school. At just 8 years old, he left his family to pursue education in Nepal’s capital. His path then took him to the United World College in Venezuela, the College of the Atlantic in Maine, and a Master’s Degree as a Schwarzman Scholar in China.

As the Director of UWS Nepal, Surya leads efforts in project development, government relations, and innovative education solutions. Before joining UWS, he co-founded Bloom Nepal Schools, a pioneering network focused on interest-based learning. Surya’s work has earned global recognition, including the Prince of Wales and UNILEVER Sustainable Living Young Entrepreneurs Award in 2014, and being named in Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia in 2017, along with his recent recognition as an Earth Hero in 2024.

Surya’s passion for education and climate change drives his commitment to UWS Nepal. He believes that education is not only a powerful tool to combat poverty but also a means to equip communities for the climate challenges ahead. His life’s work is devoted to ensuring education is the pathway to a better, sustainable future for all.
