A School Transformed: How Fellows Are Shaping UWS Simma

Case Study

Abiral Tamang, an experienced educator from Makalu, Sankhuwasabha, speaks highly of the positive changes fellows have brought to UWS Simma like Esnika Rai and Tsering Dhendup. As he has worked closely with Esnika, he says “Esnika is a good person and an even better teacher,” he shares. “She engages with staff, teaches with practical methods, and is always ready to help.”

Before fellows arrived, classrooms were plain and uninspiring. Now, thanks to efforts like Esnika’s and Tsering’s, they are vibrant, student-centered, and filled with handmade teaching materials. Her creative and interactive style has boosted student confidence and engagement, especially in Maths and Science, where she teaches Classes 1 to 5 and leads daily after-school tuition for both struggling and high-performing students.

Beyond academics, Esnika actively participates in school events, promotes hygiene, and builds strong relationships with the community. She regularly visits students’ homes with the Mothers’ Group, ensuring they have the resources and support they need. “The community treats her like a daughter,” Tamang says.

Two students from UWS Simma have now received the prestigious Pestalozzi Scholarship which is an outcome Tamang proudly attributes to the fellows’ impact. “UWS is like a blessing for us,” he adds, while suggesting future fellows have a background in education to make their contributions even stronger.
