Fellowship
The UWS Nepal Fellowship Program is a powerful response to the educational crisis facing rural Nepal, where students struggle to learn foundational subjects like mathematics and English due to a severe shortage of qualified teachers. In many areas, only 1 in 4 children can count double digits by grade 4, and more fail English in national exams than any other subject. This educational gap is perpetuated by a lack of training and resources for teachers, leaving children from marginalized communities at a significant disadvantage.
Launched in 2017, the two-year Fellowship Program directly addresses these pressing challenges by mobilizing and empowering young Nepali graduates to become the teachers and leaders that their communities need. Fellows are placed in under-resourced schools, where they apply modern teaching techniques to elevate classroom learning, enhance student engagement, and improve educational outcomes. Beyond teaching, fellows work closely with students, parents, and local leaders to foster collaboration and create a supportive learning environment. The program’s vision is to cultivate a new generation of passionate educators committed to breaking the cycle of educational inequality, providing children in remote communities with the knowledge and skills to succeed and become leaders of tomorrow.

Meet Our Fellows
Navina Deshar, Fellow Alum
“The UWS Fellowship was a transformative leap-from my familiar life in Lalitpur to the remote village of Khamare in Sankhuwasabha. After two impactful years as a Fellow, I later rejoined UWS Nepal, leading both the Fellowship and M&E departments, which gave me a broader understanding of education systems and impact at scale. Today, I serve as a Programme Manager at Himalayan Environment and Life Protection (HELP), working in the Manaslu Conservation Area, where I lead projects and an afterschool program for early learners.”
Sichu Maharjan, Fellow Alum
“The UWS Fellowship was a transformative chapter in my life. The experience helped me grow both personally and professionally, shaping my values and approach as an educator. Today, I carry these lessons into my work as a Special Educator and Parent-child Trainer at Autism Care Nepal Society, where I continue to advocate for accessible and meaningful learning for all children.”
Lahana Maharjan, Fellow Alum
“While I was stationed in UWS Badagaun, Gulmi, I found my second home among the laughter and joy of the community who accepted me as their own. My experiences changed me for the better, helping me grow into a more patient, open, and compassionate person. Now, working in the Resources Himalaya Foundation as a Research Intern, I carry those lessons with me, guiding how I listen, learn, and seek solutions that truly make a difference.”
